The honest timeline
One of balayage's biggest selling points is how gracefully it grows out. Because the colour is hand-painted with a soft blend at the root, there's no hard regrowth line — most clients book a refresh every 12–16 weeks, and some stretch to 4–6 months. Compare that with traditional foils or all-over colour, which usually need attention every 6–8 weeks.
What actually fades: tone, not colour
The lightened pieces themselves are permanent — what changes over time is their tone. Blonde drifts warm and brassy as toner washes out, usually over 6–10 weeks. The fix is quick: an in-salon toner refresh (from $135) revives the exact shade without touching the lightener. Think of toner as the maintenance, and balayage as the structure.
How to make it last longer
Wash in cool water with a sulphate-free shampoo, and don't wash daily if you can avoid it. Use a purple shampoo once a week — not more — to neutralise brass. Protect your hair from heat with a thermal spray before styling, and from the sun in summer (UV is brutal on blonde). A deep treatment like our Intense Mist keeps lightened hair strong and glossy.
When to book what
Weeks 6–10: a toner refresh if your blonde is drifting warm. Weeks 12–16: a balayage refresh or our Blonde Maintenance Refresh package (from $299) — 20–25 strategic foils, toner, treatment and blow wave. Annually: a full re-balayage if you want to reset placement or go noticeably lighter.

Quick answers
Does balayage damage your hair?
Any lightening lifts the hair, but we use Wella Blondor with Wellaplex bond protection — up to 97% less breakage than traditional lightening.
Can I refresh balayage with just a toner?
Often yes — if the lightened pieces are still where you want them, a toner alone revives the tone beautifully and costs far less than a re-balayage.
How much does balayage cost in Canberra?
From $395 at Hair Avenue Braddon, including custom toner and blow wave. Ultra-blonde and corrections from $550.
